3 Ways to Make Your Home Memorable… in a Good Way

A question I get from my sellers is “how do I make my home memorable to buyers”.

That is an excellent question and I’m always happy to hear it. It means the seller is truly a partner with me in selling their home.

  1. My first suggestion is to never have anything distracting in the home… like this.

While I’m sure this person makes a ton of kids reeeeaaaallly happy when they play the giant Tickle Me Elmo Piano, it is SUPER distracting to a buyer. When a buyer leaves a home with something like this in it, the home is now forever known as the Fuzzy Piano Home instead of the home they could see themselves living in.

Seems unfair doesn’t it? I mean, they aren’t buying the fuzzy piano, they are buying the home, right? Regardless, getting rid of personal items that distract buyers from picturing themselves in the home is a must to making your home memorable for the right reasons.

2. Make Cookies

As long as we are on the Sesame Street topic, MAKE SOME COOKIES! It’s possible this is a personal bias of mine but seriously, is there any more warm, inviting and enticing smell than Chocolate Chip Cookies? Bonus – the smell of cookies will drown out any personal smells in the home. On the extremely rare occasion when cookies offend someone, you can thank me – That is not a person that can be trusted. You’re welcome.

3. Clean Curb and Pretty Porch Appeal

As the old cliche’ goes, you never have a second chance to make a first impression. When it comes to selling your home this is especially true. The lens by which a buyer views a home is permanently fixed before they even walk in. Any indication of dirt or spiderwebs or smells will send a cascade of emotions that negatively alter the way they view everything else about the home. But if the home makes them feel welcomed from the start, the opposite becomes true. They will begin to justify everything about the home and in effect, sell themselves on your home!

Now doesn’t this look inviting? Yes I’m biased, this is my house!
